Black gram or Urad is grown in the uplands of Uttranchal at an altitude of 1000-1500m above sea level. It is commonly cultivated for a pulse and various preparations of Urad have ritualistic significance in Uttranchal. 'Badi' made of this pulse is obligatory in every auspicious ceremony and festival of the State.
