Livelihoods & Skilling It is aptly said that ‘It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill’. Skill development is a proven enabling agent to get closer to employability or to become an entrepreneur. United Nation Sustainable Development Goal No. 8 that lay emphasis on ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’ clearly states how knowledge & skill development is important for human advancement that eventually results into economic growth.
Sewa International very well understands the power of education & skill development. Therefore, our efforts in the very direction envisions to empower the youth and make them future ready.
Our efforts towards skill development include empowering women by providing them hands-on training in Knitting and Ringal handicrafts (bamboo craft) in Uttarakhand. After the Bhuj earthquake, we started training and empowering kutch women to make self-reliant thru their embroidery and stitching work. In a bid to keep up with the new age market trends, we began our journey with Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) and PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana) centers, to provide industry specific skill-based training in various job roles in Uttarakhand and in West Bengal as well. When we started our project in Tripura, Bamboo furniture/handicraft making workshop for young tribal boys was very popular. Later on, we delivered training in tailoring for women folks implemented under PMKVY scheme.

Our Major Interventions in Skill Development |
1). PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana) – It was in the year 2016 when we first decided to take up government scheme to train youth to enhance their skills and hence make them ready for the employment. The scheme is generally targeted for non-skilled and semi-skilled unemployed youth to receive required skills and certification. Our PMKK (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra) centres across Uttarakhand and West Bengal is providing training in various sectors such as hospitality, IT/ITES, apparel, food processing, agriculture etc. We also delivered training in tailoring trade under the PMKVY scheme in Tripura for tribal women. The endeavour was successfully turned into entrepreneurship model as locals had developed their own production centres to take small orders. Few women started working from their home and motivated others as well. Collectively, we have trained more than 9,000 youth across all skill development programs. | 2). Digital Literacy – Our digital literacy centres objective is to equip youth especially girls with necessary computer skills that are mandatory in today’s time for their career enhancement. We are running 10 such centres are in Uttarakhand and 3 in Tripura to train youth on basic coding, accounting & other basic computer skills. |
3). Entrepreneurship training – Under this model, we focus primarily on local art/handicraft and the artisans working in region but somehow moving to other profession(s) due to lack of knowledge and funds to cop up with dynamics of market competition. Our endeavour is such to hone the skills of these artisans to match with the current market trends so that they revive their legacy profession once again and proudly own it. Likewise, we have discovered knitting and ringal (Local Bamboo handicraft) artisans in Uttarakhand and Bamboo (Bamboo Furniture) artisans in Tripura. Sewa Yuva Jyoti implies providing power to the youth and that is possible when they are connected with the entire world. Our digital literacy centres empowers them to become digital workforce that is well connected with others. We are running various basic computer courses that basic coding and accounting skills. Under our Sewa Mahila Jyoti vertical in Uttarakhad, we focus majorly on Knitting and Ringal Handicrafts as they have brought it from their ancestors but our endeavour is to take to next level so that world realize their true potential. We are conducting design & training workshops and bring their articles to various exhibitions so that these women artisans become self-reliant and inspire others as well. Our close collaboration with Forsesight Edutec (F-tec) who is pioneer institute in skill development across India has proved to be a major success in providing employment to the young population in Uttarakhand and West Bengal. We are running Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) and PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana) centers in consortium with F-tec to provide industry specific skill-based training in various job roles in Uttarakhand and West Bengal. In the past, our training in Bamboo handicrafts has been pivotal in uplifting the Bru community (local tribes in Tripura) out of poverty and unemployment. Our endeavour towards skilling and employment generation through our PMKVY tailoring centres has also showed great results. The trainees after passing out have successfully set up small tailoring business in the community itself taking orders from nearby schools for uniform, nearby locality etc.
| 4). SIDDC (Sewa International Design & Development Centre) - SIDDC was setup as a rehabilitation program after 2001 Bhuj earthquake. Objective of the program was to identify and motivate poor women in the rural areas and to deliver capacity building workshop, training cum exhibition and provide financial assistance by linking them to the banks and facilitating them to avail soft loan timely and in efficient manner. Bigger objective was to empower women Self Help Group to organize and manage sustainable entrepreneurship programme and hence when the SKSPL (Sewa Kala Shrushti Pvt. Ltd.) was incorporated. The endeavour as converted into business model as rural women being key-stakeholders driving the entire business under the supervision of Sewa International staff. Today, more than 800 women are associated with the program engaged in famous kutchhi embroidery and their work is appreciated across India thru various exhibitions, craft bazaar, handicraft markets, etc. |
