Support Menstrual Hygiene Program

According to a survey conducted by the Hindustan Times, a national newspaper of India -

More than 51 percent of women say that Indian schools do not have a proper system to prepare teen and adolescent girls for the onset of menstrual periods.
Nearly 60 percent of women feel schools lack adequate facilities for girls to change and dispose of sanitary pads.
More than 95 percent of women assert that the Indian school system should have some awareness programs to prepare girls on this subject.

Menstruation continues to remain as one of the most ignored factors in Indian women’s health. A major section of the Indian women cannot afford to spend on menstrual hygiene products every month. And most of the affordable products are filled with plastic and non-degradable ingredients which are harmful to their health. Unhygienic period and disposal practices can have major consequences on the health of women including increased chances of contracting cervical cancer and reproductive tract Infections.. And for those living in slums, shelters, and quarantine centers, access to food, water, and medicines are often deemed more important than pads.

Sewa’s Toilet and Hygiene team has launched the Menstrual hygiene project. It is the next level of building toilets in government schools. Our team has been researching better methodologies which for menstrual hygiene which would also be eco-friendly. Our answer is reusable cloth sanitary napkins. Cloth napkins are made by local women from a lower economic background, they can be washed and reused for up to 3 years. Re-usable Sanitary napkins are less expensive than disposable pads/Menstrual cups, and they reduce the amount of waste produced and are a reusable month after month. 

*Rs 200 for a girl can help her have hassle-free and healthy menstruating days for three years. (Distribution of reusable sanitary cloth napkins)
*Rs 40,000 to build a washroom for girls to use during their menstruating days in government schools.
