Balance For Better: International Women’s Day 2019

Its a time of festivals and new beginnings with the Sun shining brightly for a great year ahead. Sewa International wishes everyone on the occasion of Varsha Pratipada/Gudi Padwa/Ugadi, signifying the arrival of Spring and reaping of Rabi crops. Last month began with a grand event, Fyunli Kauthig in Uttarakhand to celebrate the International Women’s Day 2019. The festival was marked by an august audience of about 4000 women, who presented a scintillating show of traditional dance and music.

On the other hand, this year’s Holi festivities had a special flavor to it as the children at our Tripura refugee camps had for the first time played Holi, while those in Kashi centers had a great time participating in colorful creative drawings and the celebrations.

In Uttarakhand, Sewa International is creating a skill sharing ecosystem, with the newly passed out PMKK trainees holding Fruit Processing workshop for the local SHG members. Sewa International’s Toilet and Hygiene project also organized menstrual hygiene awareness camps in Uttarakhand and UP, where team interacted with school girls and community women to understand the taboos and local eco-system and how best to support them.

All our projects are possible only due to support of well-wishers like you, who give us the inspiration to carry forward the mission to serve the needy and the deserving.

Sewa International Celebrates Fyunli Kauthig

Sewa International marked the 4th edition of Fyunli Kauthig – a local festival celebrated each year on the occasion of International Women’s Day since 2016. This year the event saw new heights as more than 4000 women gathered from across the remotest regions of Rudraprayag and Chamoli. The event was held at Gauchar Grounds, Chamoli and was graced by Mrs. Vijay Bartwal, (Chairperson, State Women Commission, Uttarakhand) as the Chief Guest. The event was sponsored by ONGC. The ground team at Uttarakhand had been working tirelessly towards the preparations for about a month, organising, various performances, activities and logistics. The day long event saw various local dance forms and singing performances by the women of the SHGs. Stalls demonstrating knitting and Ringal products made by women from Sewa Mahila Jyoti were displayed.

Other stalls showcased the skill of our PMKK trainees, demo farm centers and other upcoming projects like Himsampada and HARELA.

Teelu Routeli, Nanda Jaat Yatra and many other awe-inspiring performances which bear the religious as well as historic significance of Garhwal were held by women of Tapovan, Karnprayag, Pokhari, Chandrapuri and Narayankoti clusters. Informative skits to display departmental association with Sewa such as healthcare, eco-tourism, non-farm activities like ringaal handicraft, knitting were exhibited by women and children across Sewa family. 13 women achievers across various fields were felicitated by the Chief Guest for their exemplary work.

A blood donation kiosk was also organized by Shri Mahant Indresh Hospital alongside stalls from across different departments. Participation of women and guests in blood donation was notable.

The event was a huge success and an important milestone of celebrating the work done by Sewa International in Uttarakhand.

Fruit Processing Training At PMKK, Paduli

In a bid to extend the benefits of skill-sharing opportunities, Sewa Uttarakhand conducted a one-day fruit processing training program for our SHG members from Pokhari. The session was conducted at PMKK Paduli, where the trainees gave instructions and demonstrated the processing of Malta (a local fruit) into juice. The women from various SHGs participated enthusiastically in the session getting hands on experience. Such an exchange of skills between the PMKK trainees and the local women can go a long way in spreading knowledge and providing livelihood opportunities to the locals.

The women then went on to teach the process to other members from their respective SHGs in their villages. We hope to have more such skill sharing session that can convert into successful indigenous small businesses for these budding women entrepreneurs.

Holi Celebrations with Bru and Kashi Children

Sewa International wishes everyone a happy and colourful Holi. This year our tutioncenters at Tripura and Kashi came bubbling with life as the little children participated in the holi celebrations and filled the place with festive colours and laughter. In the day long festivities children along with their parents gathereed in the center premises and played holi with the teachers as well as other community members.

At Tripura Refugee Camps in Ashapara and Naisinghpara, it was a tough task convincing local parents to celebrate the festival of colors, as they fail to understand the significance. But once, our team explained them about the message of the victory of Good over Evil that the festival propagates, they finally agreed and participated whole-heartedly with kids having the most fun!!

Sweets were distributed to the children along with drawing competition conducted to bring out the creative spirit among kids.

Harsh Pathak – an inspiring volunteer

The first thing that comes before giving is the ‘will to give’.

Harsh Pathak, a class 12 student of SMT Payari Devi Intermediate College (Ramnagar, UP) has become an inspiration for these little children. Every evening after his school he takes out time from his studies to come to ourtution center and teach Maths, Science and English to the children. His teaching style and rapport with the children is warm and friendly. The children relate to his teaching methods and ways as he is the youngest teacher they have ever had and they lovingly call him Harsh Bhaiyya. His zeal and sincerity is an example of how by our small efforts and some time, we can create an impact. Even if it is just for a group of children.

Proud of you Harsh!
