Sewa Uttarakhand

Sewa Yatra – A visit to Sewa Uttarakhand

After a fantastic 3-day aggregation of the Sewa International family from all over the world at the 6th International Sewa Baithak(ISB), a team of 17 delegates proceeded on Sewa Yatra across Uttarakhand for an experiential trip for 4 days(9th-12th Dec) to visit our flagship projects, Sewa Kaushal Vikas Kendra(SKVK) and PMKK projects in Uttarakhand.

On day 1, the team visited our PMKK, model skill development center in Chamba(Tehri), where they interacted with the trainers, centre staff and the students.

Day 2 was spent in trekking and sightseeing around Saari village and Devriyatal lake near Ukhimath Chopta road, which gave them a vivid understanding of the functioning of Sewa Saahas, our adventure tourism vertical in Uttarakhand.

Then the team visited Chandrapuri(Rudraprayag), where our PMKK Centre and a SewaMahila Jyoti knitting and production center is running. On day 3, the team visited our Sewa Sansadhan Kendra in Pokhari(Chamoli), which is a facilitating center for the local villagers. Afterwards, they attended the directors’ meeting of Sewa Nagnath Utpadak Sangh, which is a federation of farmers in the area. Participation in SHG meetings and interaction with local members also formed an important part of the yatra. On the last day, the team made a visit to the Adibadri temple at Karnaprayag(Chamoli) followed by a visit to a Medical Checkpoint served by SewaArogyam(Medical Health Vehicle), where they saw health services being provided in remote village area. The yatra was overall a very enlightening experience for the entire team of delegates some of whom interacted with the beneficiaries for the first-time in their lives.

Success Story – Sewa Aarogyam

In a heartwarming story from Uttarakhand about a little girl, Nandini from Chauriya village (Rudraprayag), who while playing got injured, bruised her arm and was bleeding profusely. The distance between her village and the nearest health center was 60 km. But due to the presence of Sewa Arogyam, our mobile health vehicle in the area, the girl was rushed for treatment and was immediately treated by the health workers. It is seen many times that in the absence of first aid treatment many patients lose their lives or suffer from excessive bleeding. It is with this vision of providing immediate help and treatment to casualties and patients in areas that are remote and difficult to reach, Sewa Aarogyam was launched to cover 250 villages over a month.

Additionally, the camp at Chauriya, resulted in treatment to 60 more patients in the village. We hope that we are able to serve more and more people in the region and no one has to suffer due to the lack of medical care.

Sewa Kashi

Reinventing Education In Kashi Tuition Centres

At our tuition centers in Kashi and Chunar areas of UP, we are trying to implement modern means of education and learning by involving the children with e-learning and audio-visual lesson videos. It has been seen that by teaching children through these methods, their interest level and reception to new information is heightened and they show more involvement in the lesson. We try to use regional languages in addition to English, so that the children feel comfortable and are able to comprehend the subject better. Afterward, the children are asked to carry an activity based homework or a peer interaction about the topic for their better retention and understanding.

Success story

I am Rubi Pandey,12, a class 5th student from Prathmic Vidyalaya, Village Bhitti, Ramnagar(UP). My father is an auto driver and my mother is a homemaker. I have two sisters and three brothers. My hobby is drawing and I want to be a teacher when I grow up. I am a student of Sewa Kashi Bhitti learning center and have been studying here since last 3 years. I like how subjects are taught here and then tested after every month so that Sewa can monitor our progress regularly. I also learn a lot of new things like art and craft etc. I learn new habits from my teachers who are kind enough to teach us and answer all our doubts. I always secure the top rank in my class. This year we also got a school kit from Sewa International, which consisted of notebooks, drawing copy, color box, and pencil box. We have also started getting fruits and milk products as part of the nutrition programme started at the learning center. I want to thank Sewa for their help.

  • Access to Potable Water

Area of work: Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Children have a right to basic facilities such as toilets, safe drinking water, clean surroundings and basic information on hygiene. Water, sanitation and hygiene in schools create an enabling environment which secures children’s dignity, safety, health and attendance in classes.

From our need analysis data, we observed that more than 50% of the schools selected do not have access to water. Due to lack of water supply, existing toilets had become non-functional. We are providing fresh water connections in the following government schools in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.

  3. Primary School Tal, Firojkhan
  4. BasicKanyaa School, Krashna colony

Sewa USA Organizes Christmas Luncheon For Fire Evacuees in California

Sewa International USA team, working with a group of local volunteers headed by Heather Helwig, a long-time resident of Loomis, Placer County, CA, organized a Christmas luncheon for 200 fire evacuees of the devastating fires that ravaged Northern California in early November. The fire that originated in Butte County, CA, burnt most part of the three cities of Paradise, Magalia, and Concow to a cinder killing 83 people.

The event was held at the Blue Goose Event Center in Loomis, on Sunday, December 23. Over $7,500 in gifts, gift certificates, and laptop donations were distributed to the individual attendees at the event. This brought some holiday cheer in the lives of the people who lost everything in the deadly fire.

The attendees were offered a delectable menu of traditional Christmas food, holiday pies, cookies, and more. A variety of activities awaited the attendees of all age groups: face painting, fashioning balloon animals, and a raffles game. Everyone appreciated the efforts by Sewa USA team to spread happiness and joy to the fire-affected community.
